Former Horseshoe Meadows Hotshot Supt, (SQF), Ben Charlie past away today. Without a doubt, Ben was one of the original Type I Supt’s that inspired many and paved the way for hundreds more. Godspeed Ben Charlie, Godspeed.

Yes. God speed for sure! I remember Ben from my early FS years and saw how his actions and leadership positively affected so many others. A great Supe.

I recall Ben and his sons well. After he retired from Horseshoe, I sometimes ran into him driving buses on fires and talking to the younger firefighters coming up through the ranks. Great guy.

One of the originals. A legend.

We used to see Ben and Horseshoe quite regularly when I was with Kernville Helitack and the old BLM-USFS handcrew, Crew 6 (the predecessor of the Kern Valley hotshots) back in the early 80’s.

Ben was my supervisor for 12 years. He was an outstanding leader and fireman! He made Horseshoe Meadow Hotshot an outstanding crew. A lot of great fire fighters have came off the crew and are still in the fire service. God bless Ben.
