Fire in the Forest: A Cycle of Growth and Renewal
About fire's effects on ecosystems in the Rocky Mountains. Basic book, showing that fire is a part of the natural cycle of life and death and cycling of the environment. Some fine illustrations that show the stages that are described, pre-fire, fire and post-fire. Good for young children and older ones... and their parents. Tahoe Terrie
Forest Fire! (Fraser)
This is a well illustrated book on the effects of Wildland fire that we found in a National Park bookstore. Starting with a decadent forest (naturally) it goes through the life cycle starting with a lightning fire to show how the forest responds over time. Detailed illustrations show details as small as the insects in the forest. All the kids (from 4-11) enjoy this book and we re-read it often at bedtime. While the book does show how fire can be destructive (injuring animals, killing plants, etc.) it also shows how the forest responds with re-growth and that it is all part of a cycle. 5 chainsaws BLMgirl

Hotshots! Zero Saws!

Just got back from the Pot Peak fire ('04) and went to the library to get a book for my kids. I found this one children's book that's pretty weird.

It's called HOTSHOTS! by Chris L. Demarest and the story is F'd up! These so called Hotshots (engine crew members) get a call to go to this fire. When they arrive, they all jump out, grab drip torches and immediately start burning out. The wind is going uphill and their engines are on top. They start burning downhill with fuel between them and the engines.

Anyway, they end up deploying and f'ing up big time. When they get back to their rigs, they have a bite to eat and prepare for the next fire. All in a days work it says.

The author makes it look like deploying is part of the job. Like it happens all the time, it's actually expected. LOM

NOT A GOOD LESSON TO BE TEACHING. Zero Saws! Not recommended.

Epitaph for the Giants
Epitaph for the Giants, The Story of the Tillamook Burn is the fascinating story of a fire that burned 411,000 coastal Oregon acres near my home in a couple of weeks in August 1933. (I wasn't born yet!) About 250,000 acres burned in one day when the fire blew up and rained ash and tree parts down on ships 500 miles out at sea! Kemp intersperses daily fire reports with current newspaper headlines to provide the historical context. Good factual companion book for "Fire on the Wind" if you have a young person you're sharing the Tillamook fire story with. Five chainsaws. Cheryl

Fire: Friend or Foe
This is a really *fine* book geared toward youngsters, but will probably be enjoyed by the FF reading it to the child as well. The book is a photo essay, about 80 pages in large kid-sized print. It's 9"x11.5" format and is lovely enough to have on your coffee table as a point of interest for adults. The photos by William Munoz make up more than half the book and are outstanding. Dr. Dorothy Hinshaw Patent who writes extensively for children, tells a balanced scientific story of the role of fire in the environment, including sections on people and fire and plant adaptations to fire. She then goes on to describe fighting wildland fire and discusses the role of prescribed fire. Very educational and a lovely book. Great photographs! Fine job by Munoz. AL

Summer of Fire: Yellowstone 1988
Nothing too special about this one for the adult fire community. Good educational book for the general public or a "basic fire suppression/ecology" book you'll most likely find in the high school library. I give this book 2 chainsaws. AZ Trailblazer

I agree with AZ Trailblazer on this. Format is 9.5"x11" and it has lots of photos. It was published in 1991 and photographic technology has advanced since then. It has some good basic information on the summer of the Yellowstone fire, the benefits of fire in the ecosystem, and how plants, birds, and mammals fare. All new stuff at the time. But neither the photos nor the message "shines" in the way that Fire: Friend or Foe does. 3 Saws. AL

Yellowstone Fires: Flames and Rebirth
By Dr. Dorothy Hinshaw Patent, this book was published in 1990. It had a new message and nice photographs when it was first published. However, given what we know today, the message is not so new. Photography, also, has come a long way in 10 years. While this book is OK, I would recommend with unbridled enthusiasm her newer book Fire: Friend or Foe, which covers much of the same information with Munoz's photos and some information on Yellowstone. Fire on the Wind
Fire on the Wind, by Linda Crew is an historical fictional account of a logging-camp teenage girl, Storie, who lived through the Tillamook fire of 1933. Presentation of the narrative alternates her story with brief vignettes of others who are experiencing the fire many miles away. Most who fought fire in those days worked for the logging companies or were part of the CCC. (and no PPE!) While this book is geared toward teens, I found it very interesting, especially in conjunction with the historical book "Epitaph for the Giants" on the adult fire page. I got a real sense of historical western firefighting roots, values, and language. 5 saws, especially for teens! Cheryl
