El Cariso HS: El Cariso Hotshot logo, infamous "Ruptured Duck", part of hotshot history.

the idea of the Ruptured Duck logo came from the old ex-military C46 transport that the El Cario HSs flew to and from fires on.  That plane in the military was called the Ruptured Duck. When the hotshots decided to pick up on the ruptured duck image, Doug Campbell asked his wife Patty to sketch out a daffy duck with a crutch and a hurt heel. She did, and the rest is hotshot history. CIIMT2: California Interagency Incident Management Team 2 logo. A team member said to Mellie, "I'm glad you like the logo. We really like it too. Greg Greenhoe designed that pin many years ago. He used to be the Fire Management Officer on the Angeles and is now the Deputy Director in Missoula. We were asked at one time to design a new one because the triangle shape resembled the "Fire 21" logo. But, Greg designed ours first, so we got to keep it. We did modify the pin in 1998. The "2" in the middle had been black. We changed it to blue because we did an assignment in Yosemite for flood recovery. We liked the "earth, wind, fire" triangle and changed the blue to reflect the color of water." Information on the team is here: CIIM Team 2. Logo supplied by Mellie.

St Joe IHC: This is the logo of the recently disbanded St. Joe IHC. Formed in 1967 on the St.Joe National Forest (now the South Zone of the Idaho Panhandle N.F.) the "Joe" was the last of three Inter Regional crews hosted in Northern Idaho. The other two crews hosted by the forests of the Idaho Panhandle were the Kaniksu I.R. and the Coeur d'Alene I.R. Both were disbanded in the late 70's-early 80's. The St.Joe was hosted by the St. Maries Ranger District from 1967 to 1997. The crew celebrated their 30 year anniversary function at Clarkia Work Center. The crew was relocated by the Idaho Panhandle National Forest to Coeur d'Alene to be a more centrally located resource for the other districts on the forest after the 1997 fire season. As happens to most good things moved by a government agency, things didn't proceed well for the St. Joe after the move. The 1998 fire season was great but things began to fall apart. Internal conflicts, conflicts with the local district personnel, micro-management at the district and forest level, and animosity from local district fire personnel, the last of the St.Joe IHC members moved on to bigger and better careers during the ASAP/AVUE hiring in 2001.

In March of 2001 the last of the St.Joe overhead that moved in 1997, left and the St. Joe was no longer. The new organization there will be known as the Idaho Panhandler (did I add an extra letter to this) Hot Shot Crew.

The many ex crew members of the St.Joe are proud to have been members of this former outstanding national resource. Readers and users of this website please welcome this new Type I crew onto the fire scene in 2001 and give them any breaks deemed necessary while they get on their feet. Sent in by Ex Joe Boy.

Chilao 1 & 2: It would please me very much to have you post the attached pictures of some insignia from my days as a Forest Service groundpounder. It would also serve to honor the many men I worked with during those days. All are ballcap insignias.
#1 CHILAO Hotshots, 1972 to 1978, R5-Angeles NF; The character in the picture was supposed to be the Superintendent Dick O'Connor. More info from Robert S. who knew the dates: This logo was designed during the year of 1972 as I was with the two fellows who put it together. Dick O' Connor was seen as some what as fruitcake by most of the crew because of his many quirks, but not one of these oddities ever put into question O'Connor's fire fighting leadership and expertise.
#2 CHILAO Hotshots, 1979 to 1984. My buddy Jim Beard designed the new logo of a gorilla with a shovel in one hand and a chainsaw in the other while carrying a hosepack on its back.. Chilao hotshots were disbanded in at the end of 1984. Both logos sent in by JR.

Sierra Helitack: 1980?- 1985, R5-Sierra NF. Trimmer Helibase overlooking Pine Flat Reservoir. During the period I was working there we had two helicopters on contract from Roger's Helicopters down in Clovis, CA. One was an Alouette 3, then a souped up Bell 204.

NIHC and NI Fire Mgmt: Here are a couple of logos I designed some years ago. They are both basically the same but also different... The philosophy behind them is based on the fire triangle. You need fuel, heat and oxygen to have fire... I have always felt that safety, teamwork and professionalism is needed to manage fire. Anyway, I designed these with that philosophy in mind. The National Hotshot Logo was adopted for the National Hotshot conference which was held in Mesa AZ in Feb, 1992. The other logo was designed for all wildland fire personnel. Alberta Firefighter Competition, Alberta Firefighters 1965-1995, Alberta Forest Service Protection, Alberta Forest Service Firefighter: From Alberta, Canada. Compliments of Piet Broersen. (0206) His message: Quite an interesting site you folks have, I noticed your "logos" section and thought I might have a few items of interest for this portion of your site. I have quite a bunch more scans of crests and patches other than these four. Most of what I have dates back to the '80s & early '90s when I worked with the Alberta Forest Service and firefighting was a predominant part of a Forest Officers job. I've since left Alberta and work with the British Columbia Forest Service now and in my job function, Compliance & Enforcement, firefighting is not in the job description any more. If these are of interest I can submit a bunch more sometime, I also have scans of my '87 fire campaign & '88 Yellowstone fires limited edition belt buckles. Thanks and regards, Piet.

From Mike:
You all need to bear with me on my recollections of the R8 smokejumping program. It has been 26 years since I was involved in it. If anyone out there was involved and can fill in the gaps or make corrections, feel free.

The patch DF mentioned earlier was designed by Walt Congelton from the Siskiyou Smokejumper base if I recall correctly.

I believe the program was initiated in early 70's by the Siskiyou Smokejumper base located near Cave Junction, Oregon. It concluded in the late 70's. I went back the first time in the fall of 1974 for a short 3 weeks or so of their fall fire season. We were based out of Wise, Virginia at the Lonesome Pine smokejumper base. Consisted of a trailer housing the office and crews lounge, and another trailer with no interior walls and a table running the length of the trailer for rigging parachutes. We were using a Beech 99 aircraft. Could have snow on the ground in the morning and be jumping fires in the afternoon. Not allot of action on that trip.

Next made the spring trip in 1976. Operated out of trailers at Johnson City, Tennessee in March-April. Also had a contingent of jumpers at Fort Smith, Arkansas. Season started slow with some prepositioning in London, Kentucky and Andrew-Murphy, North Carolina to cover fire danger in those areas. Used to jump into the field at A-M, then pack up chutes and be ready for fires in PM. Latter part of the season the fire danger greatly increased to the point more jumpers were brought in to our base. Believe they came from Missoula, Montana. In one 13 day stretch I had 11 fires in 13 days. We had two people that went 13 for 13, and I think a couple guys had two in one day. An incredibly busy and exciting time. Planes used were Beech 99's and DC-3's. One of the DC-3 pilots was Whitey Hawkmiester. He was an exceptional pilot that cared very much for his aircraft and his smokejumpers. Whitey was killed a few years later fighting to land his disabled DC-3 in a remote river canyon.

Hall '93, Hall '97 & Molonglo '97: Here are some patches from 2 brigades I was in the Australian Capital Territory. Hall Volunteer Bushfire and Emergency Service Brigade Patch (after amalgamation with ACT Emergency Service, 1997)  Hall Village is situated approx 20 north of Canberra and service the Rural Communities and urban interface in the N/W of the Australian Capital Territory.

The stylised flame and 'fire triangle' is taken from the logo of the Australian Capital Territory Bushfire Service and represents the Bushfire arm of the Brigade. The orange and white checker board is taken from the 'trade mark' Australian State Emergency Service design and represents the Emergency Service arm. This logo was introduced when the ACT Bushfire Service was amalgamated with the ACT Emergency Service (Civil Defense).

Volunteer Bushfire and Emergency Service Brigade Patch. Molonglo Volunteer Bushfire and Emergency Service Brigade was formed in 1997. It services the North-Western Rural-Urban Interface of Canberra, the capital of Australia. The stylized flame in the centre of the patch is taken from the logo of the Australian Capital Territory Bushfire Service. The orange and white checker board is taken from the 'trade mark' Australian State Emergency Service design. Photos of engines or "brush rigs" on the Engines 6 photo page. I suspect our Rappel crews (Type 1 - R) will still wear their own unique badge, as far as I know it hasn't changed much if at all from the one you are already showing. ANF Fire Patch/Coin & Back of the ANF Coin: In early April 2007, these patches --that were handed out by the ANF Chief Don Feser as a fire morale builder-- became a bone of contention. The ANF Forest Supervisor demanded they be collected and returned to her. In part this led to the early retirement of the Chief, leaving the Forest with no leadership and little experienced fire staff and also causing a hole in the Incident Management organization in R5 and the nation. Warthogs: Ab, About 10 years ago I was given one of these Warthog pins (photo attached) after an especially tough fire assignment in Arizona. The fella who gave it to me gave me a brief explanation about the criteria for inclusion into this "fraternity" of Warthogs. On the fire he was my Division Supervisor but I recall he was a district ranger from Region 6 and getting ready to retire. I am trying to remember what the components of the " Make SH-- Happen" stand for, you'll have to read the pin to get this question. I was just wondering if there are any other Warthogs out there? is this group still around? a little help would be much appreciated. Sus Scrofa de Mort. If anyone has more info, please send it in.
