-1952-'59? Laguna (aka Cleveland HS) From KJ, some background info on the old Cleveland Hotshots.

Stationed out of Camp Ole on Mt. Laguna, Descanso Ranger District. The superintendent then was Leon Ballou. His wife Irene Ballou also worked for the USFS on the Descanso as an Administrative Officer or something to that effect. I do not know of anyone who was on the old Cleveland Hotshots who rose up to be an IC or FMO but I'm sure there were some, I have limited knowledge of the crew in those days.

Dick Raybould was the FCO (FMO) on the Descanso from the late 40's or early 50's until he retired in 1973. I don't know if he was ever on the Cleveland Hotshots but he had a great reputation as a top notch forest service fireman who could really hike the hills. (Ab note: Raybould was on the Oak Grove.) The crew moved to the Trabuco district in 1959 (That's what I always heard) and Danny Street was the superintendent. They were burned over on the Decker fire that same year. There were 7 fatalities on the Decker, not sure if most were hotshots, but one was the Trabuco District Ranger. Red Wilson who was engine captain at El Cariso in 1976 said he was on the crew on the Decker fire. He said when the fire blew up, he heard Danny Street yell "Throw your tools and run for your lives." Red said he was running down the Ortega Highway. He was 18 years old.

If anyone has info on this early version of Laguna (aka the Cleveland Hotshots) that was disbanded then resurrected in '74, please email Ab.

Summer of 1974 a Bell 205 was added to the team with Smokey Vallesillo as Helishot Supervisor and G. Motschall as crew foreman. This was, I believe, the first regular 14 man helishot crew organized to fly with a Huey.

I was on the crew in 1973. It was a 15 person hand crew with George Motschall as the foreman. Around Sept of 73, a contract ship, a Bell 205, with Region 3 was detailed to the BDF and stationed at Mill Creek. We then became the flight crew with Smokey Val as the helitack foreman. The following year the ship returned to Mill Creek and the newly formed Mill Creek Hot Shots used it. I believe that this ship burned on a fire on the San Jacinto Dist in 1975 and was replaced by a Bell 204. By that time Smokey had a 10 person fire crew for the ship along with a 7 person helitack. -George Ozanich

1959-65 Converse From John Hatcher:
The Converse crew on the San Gorgonio District, it was already disbanded in 1973. People who would remember: Moe Moreno, Dave Schaefer, Randy Munoz, Smokey Vallesillo. Moreno and Schaefer transferred to MNF early 70's. Munoz was the Engine Captain at Camp Angeles, and went to CDF as a crew captain --retiring now. Smokey Val retired lives in Banning.

Part of the problem for Converse was its location, and the long drive to get anywhere quickly. Another part was one of the buildings burned. The station was rebuilt while I was on the district. Bill Smith, the Running Springs Fire Chief and Russ Johnson, both BDF retirees, could also fill in a lot of blanks. Russ now works for ESRI in Redlands.

From Former CDF~~
~~Only person I know from the Converse Hotshots was the future Supt. of the Del Rosa Hotshots (Ron Regan) who retired some time ago. I met him in 1984 and learned from him until the time he retired.... and still learn to this day.

If I remember the story correctly, Ron was a member of the Converse HS before he headed off to Vietnam, and then when he returned, he was a member of the Del Rosa Hotshots. Between the time when Ron left to Vietnam and he returned, the Converse crew was disbanded. Ron finished off his career as the Supt. of the Del Rosa Hotshots in the early 1990's. I believe he was the longest serving HS supt. of the crew.

Stories fade over time and I am probably wrong in my recollections or how the story goes...... Ron can explain it better and give a better history of the Converse HS crew history. I am not sure of the time lines.... just the effects of the stories of my mentors.

T. Molzahn..... great to see you still around and leading.... Weren't you on Converse also?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My name is Joe Chandler. I was originally assigned to the Del Rosa Hotshots in 1959. Some of us then were transferred to the Converse Hot Shots to finish the season. We were the first Converse Hot Shot crew. My memory is bad so the only names I remember were John Eby, and Jim Witt. Witt was our foreman. We were put in an old CC camp with a four seat outhouse and lousy beds. The dorm burned down sometime after I left. I believe we fought seven Class E fires that season. A couple of the ones I remember were the one that burned down the Morton Peak lookout, and the Stable fire behind Arrowhead. Also a couple in Cajon Pass. Bob Chandler, my brother known as Moe, was on the crew in later years. I wish I could remember more and if I do I'll write again. Take care.
If anyone has info on this disbanded California crew's history, please email Ab.
I was on the Converse Hot Shots 1962 and 1963. In 1961 Bob Woodland was the foreman - no sup at that time. In '62 Gary Bratton was the foreman. At that time only a 15 person crew. I believe Bob Glascock was the foreman in 64 and 65. I was drafted early in 1964. When I came back from Vietnam in 66, Converse was already disbanded. I was stationed at Oak Glen as a driver from March of 66 until August 66. Then reassigned to Converse until the summer of 1968. Went to Del Rosa in 1973 and retired in 1997.
--Converse Alumni include Bill Shaffer, Bob Chandler (retired Arrowhead Fire District), Greg Davis (retired USFS), Jesse James Wadkins (living in Oklahoma), and Dennis Stine (retired USFS). -Ron Regan, Retired Sup 3
I was a member of the Converse Hotshots in 61, 62, and 63. During these years Bob Widlund was foreman in 61 and Gary Bratton in 62 and 63. On occasion Smokey filled in. All were excellent leaders who expected the best from all crew members. Steve Nehring (from Louisiana), and myself served as squad bosses during the summer of 63. We were followed by Bob (Moe) Chandler and Bill Shafer. Moe was kind enough to forward many pictures from those years. Hard work, comradery, and great crew members.......Great memories. - Wayne King; 208 337-3134
Arroyo Seco,
possibly aka a Monterey crew
From Old LPF:
In 1957 there was a Hot Shot crew at Arroyo Seco on the Monterey RD on The LPF. If I remember correctly, Ozena and Arroyo Seco were both small HS crews -- 12 or 15 people -- while Los Prietos was a 24 or 25 person crew and John Maulmen was LP foreman. I don't remember who ran the other 2 crews. I think they where done in 1958 or so.
In your IHC history you listed "Monterey". Not sure if you were referencing the Monterey RD, LPF. There was not an IHC those years but there was a 30 person helishot crew on the Monterey RD during 1976-1978. The Helishot Sup was Don Lopez. Gerry Barney and Rick Johnson were module leaders. Jim Chestnut and Kenneth Stump were assistants. Juan Lopez was the H-526 foreman.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From Don Will:
I remember the Monterey Helishots back in 1974-77 when they were based at the Jolon Mission at Ft. Hunter Leggett. The helicopter was based at Arroyo Seco, and for a short stint at the Indians. The crew was 20-25 strong and the crew colors were light blue t-shirts and hats. Don Lopez was Supt, (he passed away a few years back in his hometown of Espanola, NM. His daughter, Sandra works at ASC). Gerry Barney and Rick Johnson were the foremen I remember and Jim Chestnut, was a Squad Boss.

The crew regularly worked project during the day and had an initial attack module pre-designated. I remember a very aggressive crew and hard workers. Don was very much old school and everything was about work. One of his famous quotes that still reverberates in my brain was on an assignment on the LP. We had hit a fire on IA in the afternoon and cut line all night. The
next day we were gridding and securing and all of us were out of water. Gerry Barney went up to Don and asked that he order water for the crew. Don's answer was, and I quote because I heard it, " No water, work."  I remember on an assignment on the ANF when Don jumped me because I wasn't cutting the brush with one or two swings of my Brush hook. Another famous Don Lopez quote, " "G-------t, Will, Cut those bushes".

Gila IHC... originally Gila IR in '68
They had 3 10 person crews at Negritio Fire Base and they would take turns staffing the IR and the helicopter with the 3 crews. 1974 Silver City IHC formed and it was decided that the Gila IR name should change to Negrito IHC, that also finished the 3 10person crew rotation. Stayed that way until 2000 when the name was changed again to Gila IHC (also Dewey Rebbe's 1st season as Supt.). That was when I got there and we had some old narrative hanging around in the trailer there. Gary J, told me the part about the 3 10 person crews... he was there for it.
Also, Jerome MacDonald (was a T-1 DPIC (and longtime OSC1) and Regional Training Spec in R3) was the supt for a good part of the '90s

Teams history, going from Large Fire Organization to ICS:

Scott Vail R5 says the incident management teams were started in their current version -short-teams anyway- in '85
Bob Alvord R5 LPF: There were originally 3 teams designated in the mid 70's to test out ICS in Region 5: ICs were Bob Alvord, Chuck Mills, Jim Stump.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OOFG says in R6, ICS was initiated in about 1982. The Willamette NF had a long team that year with the Siuslaw NF
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

From John Hatcher, R5: I remember only 2 ICS teams transitioning from LFO (large fire organization) to ICS. The IC from the BDF was Gene Kemble and the IC from the ANF was Jim Stumpf. I was on Gene's team and after one season the transition was complete, and we went back to the Region's six teams. I became the PSC on Bill Howard's then Bill Cadola's team in 1978, and we still had to get our "card punched" to complete the transition from LFO to ICS.

The R-5 ICs that I remember from the early 70's were Dick Montague (ANF), Myron Lee (CNF), Jim Bates (LPF), Bill Howard (PNF), George Mendle (MNF), and Gene Murphy (BDF).

Bob Irwin, Jerry Monesmith and Arnie Masoner were the three people at the Riverside Fire Lab working full time on FIRESCOPE, and they --plus the reps from the 7 counties-- did amazing things to get ICS and other FIRESCOPE products off the ground.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mike Daugherty -was Supt of Bear Divide, Smkj, IC Team 1, Asst director for So Operations, State Fire and Rescue Chief for OES, and now works for US
Fire Administration. Barry Callenberger was Supt of Palomar and Eldorado, T1 DPIC and ended upas Assistant Regional Fuels Officer, Dale Dague went
from being a DC on the SQF to San Dimas to the WO. Molumby was Supt of Laguna for awhile.Ken Blonski was on Redding for many years before becoming a DC on the LNF and eventually becoming Deputy Fire Director in Refion 5. I don't see Little T shots both McCombs and Glotfelty were on that crew at one time.
On a related subject Bob Alvord LPF told me there were originally 3 teams designated in the mid 70's to test out ICS in Region 5. He was one of the IC's, I think Chuck Mills might have been another but I have brain fade and can't remember the other at all. May be some of the older than me crowd can remember-I wasn't paying too much attention to the command crew in those days.
Scott Vail (3/9/07)
Pleasant Valley HS Notes: Pleasant Valley Hotshots, USFS Tonto National Forest, Pleasant Valley Ranger District, Young, AZ
The Tonto got three crews in the early 1970s; Globe, Payson and Pleasant Valley. Rumor has it that PV was formed in 1972.
Some of the supes were: John C Jones 1972 to 1976; Robert Jones 1976; Bob Orlund 1980 Spring; Fred Schoeffler 1980 Fall (Fred was the long serving Payson HS supe); Ben Cline –1981-1988; Jeff Prevey-1988 to ??; Bill Mattney; Marty Rose (Former assistant supe of Payson HS)
Fred Thompson (former jumper?)
PV shots used the “Keep on Truckin’” logo in the ‘80s. Marty changed it to the wild horse/Arizona flag insignia during his tenure. (Tom S 4/17/10)
Pleasant Valley IHC... Word I got when I was there, is that the crew was another of the '68 IR crews.  We had crew pictures up from at least as far back as '70.
Not sure when they became an IHC.
As far as supts. go from the note... Bob Ortlund was the Payson RD FMO (retired in '08).  Also, Rogers Wright (currently AFMO on the Santa Catalina RD, AZ-CNF) followed Marty Rose and took the crew somewhere around '00, he had been Rose's foreman and a jumper somewhere before that.  In '03, Fred Thompson moved up from the foreman spot (he got there in '02, he had rookied at MSO in '00 and detailed to L&C IHC in '01) and he was the supt until he left for the Helena Supt job for the '07 season.  I was the foreman from '04-'06 and the Supt for the '07 season.  Andy Bernard followed on for '08 and '09.  Pat Moore is doing the job currently.
The logo... in '04, when Fred T had the job permanently after the '03 season, the crew went back to a version of the Keep on Truckin' logo until the current Cow Skull logo in '09 (maybe '08?).
One other note... No supt has lasted more than 5 years @ PV, per Woody Cline (fmr PV IHC member and longtime PVRD AFMO retired in '06), from a conversation with Woody, Fred T and myself.  I can tell you from experience, Young, AZ is a tough place to live (although easier than Negrito).
Current PVRD FMO John Thornburg was a crewmember at one point... not sure when. (Kevin McPhee)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In 1975 the Pacioma Fire, Tujunga RD, Angeles NF was the FIRST use of the ICS organization. Dick Montague was the IC and Jim Stumpf was the S&R (Search & Rescue). The name change to Operations Section Chief did not come until later. Dick Montague and Jim Stumpf switched back and forth from IC to S&R, because at the time all were still experimenting the the ICS system. The Fulton Hot Shots, along with many other crews were assigned to the Pacioma Fire. Participants included the Del Rosa, Vista Grande, Little T, Palomar, Los Prietos, Texas Canyon, Luguna, and El Carisohotshot crews, and more but I just can't recall all of them.  (Dave Provencio)

Ojai Hotshot Crew History from earthpig on 3/13/10 with historical photos

I am not sure this is exactly correct but these were some of the key players at Ojai during their formation and early years. Doug Campbell being the FMO at the time was on the right track.

1974 Bob Burnett – Supt Foremen – Terry Raley / John Szalay
1975 Bob Burnett – Supt Foremen – Terry Raley / John Szalay
1976 Bob Burnett – Supt Foremen – Terry Raley / Craig Lechleiter
1977 Bob Burnett – Supt Foreman – Craig Lechleiter / Ish Messer
1978 Bob Burnett – Supt Foreman – Craig Lechleiter / Ish Messer

Lechleiter left and went to the Redding HotShots, Mike Freed filled in behind him.
The crew was disbanded in August of 1978 during the great HotShot crew massacre.
1979 No Crew
1980/81/82 Ish Messer – Supt Foreman – Bob Becker / John Bald
John Bald may have left after 1981
1982 Last year of crew

Inquiring mind about Inter Regional Crews (9/27/07)

There was a Coeur d'Alene IR crew up until about 1980 (I think). My understanding was that they were based first at Magee and then at the CDA airport in Hayden but my facts may be off a bit. As for the rest of the Panhandle, there were originally three IR crews, CDA, Kaniksu, and St.Joe.) Kaniksu ( Priest Lake) and CDA folded before I got on with the Joe in 1984. I remember there were a couple of older guys that told stories of working on the Kaniksu. The St.Joe lasted worked out of Clarkia (St.Maries RD) from 1967 to 1998 when the IPNF moved them to CDA. When the last of the overhead from that move left in 2001 they changed the name to the Idaho Panhandle IHC.

Speaking of the Panhandle IR and shot crews there will be a 40th anniversary function for the St.Joe IHC in late October (10/26) of this year and an additional get together for the folks from the CDA, Kaniksu, and Idaho Panhandle IHC the next night. I am at my home computer and don't have the flyer but will send it tomorrow.

As for the St. Joe having the best songs, I do remember the old guys telling stories of traveling with musical instruments and actually having a band at one time but that was over long before my time. Most of the songs I heard sung would be deemed politically incorrect in today's fire world and very likely get you fired for indecency.

Lastly, I think the Lolo is the oldest IR/shot crew in R-1.
