Robbie;

Actually, I have heard that question asked by male FF…it’s usually put more in terms of “Why does my girlfriend go all psycho if I don’t call for a week/assignment/month/season?”, but I’m pretty sure it’s the same question. (tongue in cheek). And of course I had to present the academic insight…I’m not Nerd for nothin’! (laughing)

Amanda;

I’ve heard so many times that women shouldn’t be doing so many things that I do, that I’ve developed a pretty good boilerplate response (and I know that with someone you’re so close to, boiler plate doesn’t really work). I found that if you let them speak their piece, ask questions to get them to clarify their point of view, then say “I appreciate your opinion, but I enjoy this job and I’m trying very hard to be the best firefighter I can be.” I’ve found one gets more credit, and a more thoughtful response, that way than by getting defensive and confrontational, or by starting a debate. Usually, you impress the heck out of the bystanders, too. You said you’re very close to your sister…if she sees you confident in what you’re doing, and happy, I’m sure she’ll come around. Good luck and best wishes…
