Hi everyone, I have been visiting this website for about a year now and just found this section. Pretty cool to get to meet others who go through the same thing. My husband was on an engine last season and this season he is on a hotshot crew. He is out on his first fire this season (gone 5 days now in AZ) and I can already tell he’ll be gone much more than last season.

My advice is to support your hotshot if this is what he loves to do. Nothing makes it harder than to have no support from the ones you love. And that can cause it to fall apart. Make the best of the time you do spend together, remember quality not quantity. Don’t get me wrong it’s still really hard when he goes out for the first time of the season, but it gets a little easier. My husband and I have been together for 7 years and married about 2 1/2 years before he started firefighting. So maybe I had it a little easier, but I still miss him a lot. I’ve talked to many hotshots that have told me it is hard to find a girlfriend because it is hard to find someone that won’t leave them since they are hardly home. Just hang in there, it’ll get better. Just be strong.
