Does anyone know what will happen in California when minimum wages go up with federal jobs?

    Yes, there is a statute, regulation maybe even a law. Congratulations entry level Federal Wildland Firefighters are minimum wage workers. How do we change this?

    Can someone explain to me the concern? Just before I retired in January 2014 we had two temporary GS 5s with 37 years of service that were making $15 an hour and all levels below that made less. So wouldn’t this mean the lowest they could pay is $15 a hour? Isn’t that a good thing? I don’t understand the problem?

    People on the way out will retire and people coming in or with enough experience under their belt will use their experience and get a higher paying job… people need to realize the agency doesnt love YOU the way you love your job.! Be loyal to yourself and your family… There are plenty of places to fight fire where you can be home more and paid what you are worth. all OPM, the Dept of AG and the FS care about is having anyone filled in their org chart positions…. Look at what a dissaray the agency terms are ! You area Forestry Technician, but you are under Firefighter Retirement… People get killed by trees all the time so a concious determination was made to change the verbeage from HAZARD TREE to DANGER TREE ! Why ?
    I think that so nobody can try to claim Hazard Pay for cutting down a Hazard Tree, makes sense to me !

    There will be some useless employee that make more the you at ASC that will not want support you anyway. They are running off all the good people that work for them NICE JOB LEADERS!!

    The only significant thing that will happen is that it will be. Rey difficult to hire temp employees. Federal workers are not covered under the state minimum wage even though they have to pay taxes in that state. They are regulated by federal minimum wage.

    I can tell you that Cal Fire is being proactive and lobbying on capitol hill for a pay raise now. Unfortunately the USFS isn’t doing anything as usual but waiting for all the talent to leave the agency and go to Cal Fire and other departments for more pay. Once Cal Fire gets their raise we will see another mass exodus of quality FS employees from all ranks. If the regional forester in R5 was smart he would be talking to his directors and getting ahead of what will become a major retention issue in R5. Seems to me that if an agency spends thousands of dollars training an employee they would want that employee to stay and contribute to the mission.

    As far as the exodus to Cal Fire it has already started. It’s sad when a FS Captain can go to Cal Fire as a seasonal and make what he did for our agency. But like it was stated it’s all in the org chart being full and under qualified people moving up to positions just for the title. SOMEONE IS GONNA GET HURT
