What should I do to get my foot in the door if I am inexperienced? I graduated college in a non-related area but am interested in this field.

if you have a volunteer department nearby that you can get on board with, it’s a great start to learning the outline of firefighting (radio comms, chain of command, apparatus, etc.).

if not, usajobs.gov is where all of the hiring takes place. search for “wildland fire” or the position codes 0462 or 0455 to pull results. positions are categorized as GS-# and entry level is a GS-2/3/4

training isn’t required but will help, otherwise the hiring agency will provide it for you.

getting into fire is kind of a catch-22 where you need experience to be hired, but you can’t get experience until you’re hired (not totally true, but you get the idea). write up a convincing resume and a strong cover letter detailing your goals and motivation and you’ll probably land something.
