Hello, I finished my Navy enlistment earlier this year and am looking to work for the Forest Service as a firefighter next season. I’ve gotten all the basic entry certs (emt-b, NWCG FF2, & the ICS courses). Is there any advice someone could give on becoming more competitive as a prospective rookie? Looking to apply in Region 5. Thanks!

I would contact one of the Region 5 veterans Hire folks. there are ways, like the CCC green Corps, that lead directly into permanent USFS positions after completion. Try contacting Sharon Allen-Brick at Mc Clellan training center in Sacramento, Ca, she should be able to advise you. her e-mail is : sallenbrick@fs.fed.us

Don’t lock yourself into the USFS. Get your foot in the door. Apply the the BLM, NPS, FWS, CalFire, etc, and then work your way to the USFS. There are a lot of vets showing up on hiring lists, maximize your opportunities.
