Well, we just got thrown for a loop here on the SNF. I dont know all of the details but the Forest announced a vacant position for a Forest Safety Officer Detail…. then nobody heard anything about it until the spring Module Leaders meeting where it was announced that a GS 4 or 5 got the job as the Forest Safety Officer. This person will probably never attain the qualifications to be any type of Safety Officer in the fire capacity or IQCS qualification. What kind of Stupid move was that ? It totally hurts the Forest and killed the morale of a LOT of  worthy Enging Captains who could have got on an Incident Management Team and excelled in the position. Time to just hang up the boots , hose and helmet and GTF out !!!

Pretty sure you should dig deeper and see what fire background this guy has.

the Forest Safety Officer doesn’t really have any correlation with a fire Safety Officer. Fire quals are not necessary to be a successful Forest Safety Officer however, they couldn’t hurt.

Yes, you are correct , no fire background necessary… just make sure people arent tripping over extension cords in the office and things of that nature is a great way to focus on all employees safety. Never make the mistake that Fires and trees kill people and the fire ground is actually a lethat place and those tasks, observations and experiences should be left to Fire Line SOFRs and Retired AD workers.

Another reason to add to why we are losing so many good folks to other agencies.

Ummm, yeah, wow, whole lotta judgment here and not a whole lot of knowledge. The position on the forest is a safety specialist position, not a safety officer – that position is shared between the Sierra and the Stanislaus. The specialist position on the Sierra is held by someone who has spent a number of years working in fire on the ground and who has also served our country to boot.

Don’t give up the ship gang and don’t be afraid to go to another government agency. I loved the Forest Service with my hart and sole but because of the R-5 CD order in the 1980s I took a chance and moved from a FS LEO to a OIG SA position. Best move I ever made.
