Can anyone provide the facts with new current Forest Service drug testing policy? No one around here seems to know anything. The only fact we have is that positions required to have a CDL will be posted.

I work for CAL FIRE and they DO NOT drug test,
My friend applied for the USFS and they needed him to do a drug test and get a medical evaluation.

CalFire tests transport drivers and Crew Bus drivers regularly. Engine folks when they have accidents or if there is suspicion. And if you don’t think the pee test every 2 years for your commercial license doesn’t include some drug scans, well, guess what.

In region 5 USFS if you are a supervisor, an apprentice, or have a CDL, you are in the pool. Recently they added all primary fire fighters in a pool as well. Down the road, a year or two, they will add secondary fire fighters to the same pool. Its a pretty costly program to run. Can you imagine how much money will be spent piss testing those thousands of people. Its there way of trying to stay ahead of all these states legalizing Cannabis. Don’t worry though, you can still go home get drunk and come to work still loaded to fight fire for an IA. Just don’t smoke that devil weed!

If your are in a position that requires a CDL DOT regs. are the law. You have to be in a pooL. For all others it is an Agency choice. It’s also your choice to accept the limitation.
One Guy if you report to work and your fit for duty status is in question you can be sent home. And maybe tested. I do agree the politics; and medical issues around Cannibis need to be resolved. Just what is an acceptable level of THC of intoxication prevents safe working? No answer to that yet.
BTW back in the 70’s; many people chose to work for the FS over CDF because of hair length & hair facial issues. We all have choices.

CDL positions have been test designated positions since at least 2000, nothing new there. That means all engine people in California from AFEO through Captain have long been tested.
Other primary fire positions (apparently) excluding temporary seasonal positions in R5 (assume others as well) have all received notice that they are now also being tested. This puts CDL holders in two separate test pools. This has been in the works for several years, but things move slowly. Eventually I understand the temporary firefighters will also be in the pool.

I’m not sure how Calfire would have avoided testing their Engine Captains and Engineers, I guess the restricted class B didn’t fall under DOT?

All CDL required positions will be in the test pool. That has been USFS policy for a while now. With the new policy, all fire perms are to be part of the test pool. And to fish01, marijuana is still a federally listed illegal drug. Med card or not, legal in your state or not, there is no federally accepted level of THC for Fed employees. Until it gets delisted at the federal level, marijuana will be illegal for Fed employees (and technically everybody if the Feds choose to enforce).
