This is a photo of Paul Gleason, squad boss on Dalton Hotshots, taken by firefighter Miles Wilson during the 1965 Monkey Fire in San Bernardino National Forest. Wilson reports that Gleason “roped us in,” using rock climbing rope to tie the crew to trees on the steep fire line, where they slept overnight.

    Hi Karen,
I was a member of the 1965 Dalton Hotshot crew. Paul was our fire boss. Paul was a totally gungho cool guy. I love the photo taken by Miles Wilson. I f my memory serves me, he was from Oregon. He was always taking photos. I remember he took one of me drinking from my canteen with all the burned area in the background. I would love to see it again. If you have Miles Wilson e-mail address, I would sure like to contact him.
Being part of that crew at that time in my life, is one of those life changing moments.
