Oct 4 (we don't have an updated morning briefing - last date Oct 2. This info is from the Oct 4 SitRep. There is no updated acreage but MODIS shows this fire active and expanding boundaries)

Significant Events: The fire crossed the contingency boundary in the burn plan and has been converted to a wildfire. The Preston Creek road system has been closed to the public.

Observed Fire Behavior: Fire is burning actively in shrub areas where wind and slope align. Single tree torching and active backing and flanking fire have been observed.

Planned Actions: Monitor the incident with aircraft as needed. Evaluate need for additional action if significant weather change occurs.

The prescribed fire has burned about 640 acres on the national forest, much of which lie within an area fire specialists were planning to burn when conditions were conducive to meeting objectives.

Additional firefighters were ordered to a prescribed burn in the upper part of the Entiat River Valley on Sunday, after strong east winds pushed the burn across containment lines and into the U.S. Forest Service’s Entiat Experimental Forest.

The Entiat and Baker River Interagency Hotshot Crews were expected to aid in the suppression effort on Monday by constructing containment lines on the west side of the fire. A bulldozer, water tender, three fire engines and two helicopters were also dispatched to the fire on Monday. No estimate of containment has been released.

The Preston Creek Road, or Forest Service Road 5801, has been closed for firefighter and public safety.

This fire appears more quiet this morning on MODIS than it has for the last few days.

Entiat— The Entiat Ranger District is taking precautionary measures by temporarily closing roads and trails in the Preston-Fox drainages due to fire operations. While cooler temperatures are expected, windy and dryer weather is forecasted, which could increase fire activity. Both on-the-ground and aviation resources are actively suppressing the 1,290 acre fire.

The fire started as a prescribed burn to reduce fuel loading in the Brennegan Creek watershed. Unexpected high easterly winds (in excess of 40 mph) spread the prescribed burn beyond control perimeters, and into a portion of the Entiat Experimental Forest.

The fire is currently burning in the upper elevations (above about 5,000 feet) in the McCrea Creek watershed. A fire break between the McCrea Creek and Burns Creek watersheds in the upper elevations has been successful in stopping the fire’s advance. Today crews had a successful burnout operation that reduced fuels, supported by water drops. Expected containment is October 14, 2009.

Closed temporarily:

Forest Service Trails
1443 Lake Creek
1444 Angle Peak
1445 Four mile Ridge
1448 Devil’s Backbone
1226 Pot Peak

Forest Service Roads
5501 Preston Creek
5502 Upper Preston Creek & all spur roads
5503 Dill Ridge & spur roads
5504 Upper Brennegan & spur roads

Roads and trails will be reopened as soon as possible; the Entiat Ranger District predicts that the impacts from the closures are short term. For fire information about the Preston-Fox fire, call 509.784.1511.
