Castle Rock, Sawtooth NF. IMT 1 (Pincha-Tulley). Eight miles west of Ketchum, ID. Heavy logging slash.

14,190 acres/6% contained. A Type 1 Incident Management Team is in command.

Significant Events: Burning operations initiated in the Warm Springs, Adams Gulch Ridge areas to protect the surounding communities. Burn operations were initiated north along Big Wood River. Local Municipal Fire Departments supported burn operations in subdivisions by providing structure protection. Crews continued construction of direct and indirect handline in the Castle Rock area. A dozer line was completed west of Hulan Meadows subdivision.

Remarks: As of 0600 hours on August 22, 2007 CIIMT3 will be in delegated authority with Ketchum Fire Department, Ketchum Rural Fire District, Sun Valley Fire Department and Wood River Fire Protection District to continue fire protection measures in surrounding communities.

Observed Fire Behavior: Spotting and uphill runs occurred yesterday evening on the southwest and northeast perimeters of the fire. Sunny skies and drier conditions allowed fire behavior to increase today. Fire activity began increasing around 1500 hours with small uphill runs, torching and moderate range spotting. Burning operations in Adams Gulch were burning cleanly with active uphill runs, group torching and some spotting.

15,757 acres, 9 percent contained.

Good progress continued yesterday to contain the Castle Rock fire with hand lines and burn out operations. Today's activities will be similar to the past few days with ignition beginning late morning or early afternoon. Line construction will continue along the west and southwest section of the fire area. Hand line is being constructed along the ridgeline above Bassett Gulch and Alturas Gulch. This will tie in with a dozer which is working along the ridge toward the hand crews. Burn out operations will continue today starting near Penny Lake and extending west toward the West Fork of Warm Springs Creek.

Fire crews will complete burn out preparations in Hulen Meadows and continue to move north toward Fox Creek. The burn out will be slow and methodical to keep flame height low and reduce mortality to trees. A helicopter crew was inserted on the west side of the fire and began to construct direct hand-line north and south in the Boyle Mountain area. Mop up on the west flank near Castle Rock is looking good and crews will continue work today.

Approximately 30 engines continue to provide structure protection in Hulen Meadows, Lower Board and Warm Springs area, Adams Gulch, and Fox Creek. A Support Group has also been assigned to patrol, mop up and assist in structure protection and burn out operations in the Warm Springs and Hulen Meadows areas.

Nasa Research Aircraft Will Provide Real Time Data for Castle Rock Fire on August 24, 2007
NASA's Ames Research Center and USDA Forest Service (USFS) are working to bring real-time data to firefighters by flying an unmanned research aircraft that will capture infrared and visual information. A flight covering the Castle Rock Fire is scheduled for Friday night and will give firefighters real-time infrared information. The data will be used to plan the next day's suppression actions. "We're excited about helping NASA test this technology and we hope it will be of great benefit as we decide where to best place our resources," said Incident Commander Jean Pincha-Tulley.
