Hey Everyone – About a decade ago, I spent two seasons on the Feather River Handcrew, and a season on the Lassen Hotshots. I’ll be honest – I miss the job every day. Now, I’m working on a book about wildland firefighting careers, and would love to interview some folks who have experience in one (or more) of the following areas:
-Member of a Type I or Type II ICT
-CalFire Firefighter (or any other state agency)
-Private, For-Profit Firefighter (e.g. working on a Firestorm Crew in CA)
-Air Tanker Pilot (SEAT to 747, doesn’t matter ;-))
-EMT on a Handcrew
Note: if I didn’t list something, but you think it is a valuable experience worth sharing, please reach out anyways!
Obviously, I realize this is in the middle of the season, so might be tough for folks to respond, but I wanted to throw it out there and see.
What will the interview be like?
This won’t be an interrogation. And we can do it over email or phone – whatever you’re most comfortable with. I just want to get your perspectives on what it is like to serve in these roles. What does a “Day in the Life” look like for, say, a dozer operator or a helitack crewmember? I think it would be great to share your insights with folks who are considering a career in fire. Your interviews will show the diversity of opportunities available.
Thanks for everything that you all do, and stay safe out there.
