NPS fire jobs:
Just an FYI to anyone looking at permanent fire positions in the NPS. First
read They Said posts from Aug
3 2013. This unfortunately is to a large extent how it is. Also be aware that unless the job specifically states that it is 26-0, it is a 13-13. If the park has money and is inclined to keep you on, then you will work more pay periods, although you may not be doing fire-related activities. Many permanents on NPS engine crews have found it difficult to get fire assignments and very difficult to get operational fire training assignments. Being allowed to be on an overhead team seems to vary park to park, some will allow it while others will not. If this fits your career goals then give it a try, otherwise you may want to look at a different agency.
