Watching behind the scenes I’ve seen Forest Supervisors, with little regard to hiring the most qualified employees to hire women. I have nothing against the hiring of woman or minorities but you CAN NOT bypass qualified candidates (category 1) and go all the way to (category 3) poorly qualified people just to fill your hiring quota. If you have applied for fire jobs in California, and didn’t receive the job you wanted take it to ABQ! Because some people should get their ASSESS handed to them legally. (Looking at you Lassen, Modoc, Los Padre, Tahoe National Forest!) If you’re a white male. Or even just a male fight it all the WAY and make them PROVE why you weren’t hired. This is for all of you well qualified applicants.

Some of the Forest you listed did not have a Forest Supervisor present during fire hire. It was delegated to a line officer, i.e. District Ranger.

I agree with you 100% that the FS hiring practices in R5 have and are illegal. But, if we are going to rant about it, take it to the next level, or whatever we want to accomplish, please have your facts right.

I highly recommend the book “The Tinderbox” by Christopher Birchfield. For people that are unfamiliar, it will be an eye opener.

I’m not Fire but I work for another FS department and for this seaon I got a job offer over the phone, then I get this from the individual hiring me.

“Now even tho I offered you the job things can change, there is a weird political climate going on in the FS. But if things go as they should, you will recieve mail/email for a tentative offer.

I have never had someone tell me there is a weird political climate going on in the hiring system. The first thing I thought was they are probably, deliberately screwing with the hiring quotas.

    So, I shall see.

Yet again fire hire screws good people. Has anyone had any experience with there application being under rated after several years of being one of the top candidates. There need to be a system applicants can get feed back on why they wernt selected for a postion that they are fully qualified for and and an applicant who only has time in grade get selected for that position. Seems like the FS keeps screwing employees and then they wonder why we have a retention issue?

There is no retention issue anymore. More folks are staying, many positions are filled right away, hardly any Forest is having a hard time hiring. (based on the current practices they are using). So, its a sellers market. They can pick and choose…

I disagree with it being a sellers market. It’s more like a race and genders market. I have seen to many good canadets get passed up due to the forest needing to hire a more diverse work force. This is a HR night mare and nobody is willing to open that can of worms. And for retention it’s easier to just leave then fight this battle

Its possible MLJ doesn’t have a frame of reference at a regional or GACC scale. Temp applications are fewer and fewer, applicant skills sets are trending downward. Apprentice is even worse. Forests will leave fire hire next week with GS 6-9 jobs unfilled. Low pay, increased anti-federal employee sentiment, worse pay and benefit packages of any department in California and many other locations around the US are contributing to use becoming the employer of last resort. It will need to be at the edge of collapse before the FAM BOD, R5 FAM RO or Line will do something about it. They sit there with GS 13 – GS 15 and up salaries and do nothing. Doesn’t effect there paycheck.

This is why I left the FS. I was on of the most highly qualified individuals up to promote, yet keep on getting passed up for promotions, for a diverse candidate. Line or management would just give me a bs answer on why I got passed up again. So I jumped ship and went to another agency and love my job and have no stress. The grass is greener outside of the FS. From what I am hearing the FS a sink ship and is going quickly with the new administration. Get out if you can now if you can!

lol. I applied three times to fs. All three times I was passed over specifically so they could hire a woman.
I know the women that were hired and they didnt understand it. The last one was a woman with three years full time experience. She is a good firefighter. I am currently a captain on another department with twenty six years of experience. I am in better shape than most hotshots and thats sayin something. I was upset until a retired fs division chief explained it to me. The fs hiring no longer has ANYTHING to do with qualifications. I suggest to the men to state your transgender, wear a dress to any interviews and dont worry about if your qualified or not. you will be immediately hired.
