I’m wondering if R5 forests are still having retention problems up and down the state. I’ve noticed down in Southern California we are losing a lot of quality apprentices and senior firefighters to Cal Fire and other local fire departments. It seems to me that training firefighters through the apprentice academy only to lose them to other agencies is not a cost efficient way of doing business. I can’t say how many letters I’ve written to congressman over the years but nothing ever changes. New legislation gets introduced every so often but that too fall on deaf ears. When will the nations largest wildland firefighting agency wake up and start supporting their employees?

I left after 9 years, and know a handful of others that did the same

The same thing happens in CalFire, lots of money on training, while many look to go elsewhere for the bigger check. CalFire hires you and makes you much more marketable, just like the Feds. California fire fighter jobs (LG) have been a bit stagnant since the “great recession” but now that it has been “over” hiring is coming back in a big way. I expect CalFire’s ranks to thin a lot also.

it’s time to dust off the the prior retention bonus documents that were negoiated with the union if the issue can be proven……

Retion on the 4 southern forest is an age old problem as Division Chief of the Los Angeles River Ranger district I had 53 vacancies in 2007 and 4 engines where un-staffed of those 53 vacancies i had 3 vaccant Battalion Chief jobs and know one other than Chief Don Feser seem to care! After the retion pay that came from Senator Feinstien the Forest Service just cramed bodies into to positions and then took away the rentention pay. I see history repeating itsself!!!!!!

The forest service is usually 2 to 3 years behind. Don’t expect R5 to dusk off those documents for a while even with unemployment at 5.5. Sad but true. Now real forward thinking in our regional office. They just look at the fire hire staffing numbers that are created by a shop that wants to look good.
