Hey y'all, I'm hoping this is an alright place to post this. I have questions about being a new firefighter in general, being a female firefighter, fitness, and boots. I'll start with a little "about me," which you can definitely feel free to skip if you like. I'd really appreciate any advice, comments, answers, tips, criticisms... anything! to any part…

So at the risk of inflaming some...  I am wondering if the Forest Service (in California) is going to start focusing on recruitment of women.  Just watching...The LP had a women's boot camp and numbers of women at fire hire continue to be low.  The NY Times article from this fall is focusing on a few bad situations (and who…

I wanted to pose a question on the topic of converting the "Forestry Tech" position to "Firefighter". Being the agencies have used the title for years to describe the job of a firefighter, will it ever change? What's your thoughts? What can be done? How can a solidified voice help bring change?

Hello All, Outside of the website side of things, we do quite a bit of technology development for the Wildland Fire Services. One topic that seems to be regularly coming up, is the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to map the incidents, and provide for better situational awareness. What's the thoughts of the uses, concerns, questions, and overall impression? I'd…

Found this article/ map and thought the community would enjoy it.  Having worked in Alaska and lived in Scandinavia one soon realizes that the trees are much smaller at higher latitude. It's interesting to see that in this study North American fires have a global cooling effect while Eurasia has a global warming effect. See for yourself.

This headline reminded me of something we discussed on here in great depth about six years ago. The original incident happened in 1990 and was described by one NIFC official as "The greatest hoax to ever happen in wildland fire". Perhaps it's time to share it again for the benefit of the newbies. News Link 1 WLF HotList Link 2 Sand Fire…

Hey everyone, Giving Fire Geek' idea a try to italicize my thread and let the rest fill in below. As you may all be aware, I left Fulltime employment with CalFire to run WLF/FireWhat back in June. I was a Forestry Fire Captain, had one of the best stations in the state on an 800 acre forest, and made some of…

I wanted to share an interesting map that looks at disasters from 1964-2014 by county . I wonder if the 2015 fire season will bring wildfires to number 1 rank or if storms will remain at the top.  Given the impending drought conditions in the west it will be an interesting year.

First, FireWhat Inc, the company four Firefighters founded, is who bought…

I 've been collecting information on USFS and CDF engines for quite some time now.  I've got some questions on the equipment of the late 40s - early 1960s.   I've seen a few photos of the old USFS Green Hornets / Marmon Herringtons which appear to use a Wisconsin V-4 to turn their pumps. Anyone know what pump these used…

I'm wondering if R5 forests are still having retention problems up and down the state. I've noticed down in Southern California we are losing a lot of quality apprentices and senior firefighters to Cal Fire and other local fire departments. It seems to me that training firefighters through the apprentice academy only to lose them to other agencies is not…
