RT 130 Sandwich Massachusetts Firefighter Memorial

Route 130, Sandwich Massachusetts. This memorial was erected in honor of volunteer firefighter Thomas Adams, forestry worker Ervin Draber and volunteer firefighter Gordon King who were killed on a wildfire on the Shawme Crowell State Forest April 28, 1938. The three lost their lives when a wind shift in the area of a constructed backfire caused a dramatic change in fire behavior and the men found themselves entrapped by flames with no means of escape.
